In 1987, Russell Phillis recognised there was a need for a reliable hiab crane service in Perth and Western Australia. He
and wife Lyn decided to launch R & L Hiab Services and began to supply their hiab service to a select client base.
The business continued as a single-operator operation until 2001 when a second truck was put into service. This truck was
an eight-wheeled rigid with a large lift and reach capacity crane allowing greater carrying and lifting capacity. The
truck's 26m reach enabled operators to place items such as airconditioning units as high as the sixth storey of
In July 2004, R & L Hiab Services entered the next phase in our development, when the two-truck operation was
purchased by Stirling Thomson. Russell Phillis originally intended to retire after the sale, but decided to stay on
as a driver and chief training instructor for new staff.
A need was seen to supply crane trucks to suit varied client base needs and to this end R & L Hiab Services have
added an eight wheel drive heavy-lift capacity truck, a very heavy lifting 52 ton metre crane mounted on an 8x4 rigid
truck and more recently, two 8x4 Volvo prime movers with large lift capacity cranes. We now operate a total of eight
R & L Hiab Services are proud to service clients across the whole of Western Australia. Our clients are largely
made up of commercial builders, machinery companies, steel fabricators and large corporate clients such as Telstra. We
also love a challenge, and specialise in jobs that are out of the ordinary or perceived as being too difficult to
achieve. Although we operate primarily as a Monday - Friday operation, our staff are on call 7 days a week for
